EASTER BAY STEAM CONDENSERS
Steam condenser is a device in which the exhaust steam from steam turbine is condensed by means of cooling water. The main purpose of a steam condenser in turbine is to maintain a low back pressure on the exhaust side of the steam turbine. This exhaust is then recirculated into the steam turbine, causing the turbine to continue rotating.
Easter Bay Generation Plant is equipped with THREE large steam condensers, located to the right as you enter the main gate.

STEAM CONDENSER SPECIFICATIONS AND DATA
As seen in the picture, the condenser is the wide bodied cylinder behind the transfer pipes. The transfer pipes are labled 1, 2, and 3 for easy identification of the condensing unit. Each condenser has a gauge and a cover plate at the lower section facing towards the front. The Condensers feed the Steam Turbines. In order for the Steam Turbines to generate effecient power, the condensers must be operating correctly. The operating status of the condenser is based on its parts, or components. If these components are not maintained properly, the condenser may product malfunctions that will stop the generation of electricity to the area that it ultimately feeds. The Condensers are the first step to the generation of the cities power, are must be inspected and maintained consistently.
TECHNICIAN TECHNICAL DATA
CONDENSER FEEDS:
Steam Condenser 1: Steam Turbine 1
Steam Condenser 2: Steam Turbine 2
Steam Condenser 3: Steam Turbine 3
COMPONENTS (PARTS):
Exterior (Visible from the outside):
1. Outer Casing: Body of the condenser - Made of heavy gauge Steel covering a specialized insulation. If damaged, this casing may be welded.
2. Cover plate: Secured by 4 heavy nuts, removing the plate reveals the internals. This plate keeps the weather from entering the condensors internal compartment which houses the Inlet Valve and the Vacuum pump.
3. Analog Pressure Gauge:
Ranges from 0 PSI to 5000 PSI. The Gauge is located at the front of each Condenser chamber, as shown in the image above. This Analog Gauge reads the system pressure on the Condenser, allowing the technician to analyze its operating performance. The gauge is equipped with a reset button allowing a technician to test its operation to ensure it is accurate.
4. Disconnect Switch: An electrical panel housing a single switch to kill the power to the Condenser. This is located in the Electrical cabinet just behind the Condensers. The Disconnect switch is operated by pulling down to kill the electricty to its labled condenser. The switch consists of a small box wired directly to the Power Plants power supply. The box then connects to the internal area of the Condenser, feeding the vacuum pump and inlet valve.
Internal (Hidden behind the Cover Plate):
5. Hyundai Inlet Valve (A valve fitting at the base of the condenser) The inlet valve adjusts the flow and pressure within the condenser. A small motor rotates the valves flow adjuster, allowing the pressure to be decreased or increased accordingly. The valves motor may be replaced, and the housing is built as one unit that must be replaced if it malfunctions.
6. GenTEC Vacuum Pump (An single-unit electrical pump)
The Vacuum pump is what pumps the cooling water into the condensers network of tubes, allowing it to cool the steam and condense it back to a liquid. The Vacuum pump is a solid unit that cannot be repaired in the field, and must be replaced if any internals are damaged. The Vacuum pump seals are replaceable if a leak is present.

Technical Specifications
- Standard Operation Pressure: Within 3000 and 3500 PSI
- Free of any condensation or puddled water behind cover plate
- No condensation or water around seals of Vacuum Pump
- Operating Voltage Reading: 480V 200AMPS into the disconnect switch from the power supply.
- Inlet Valve in open position at standard operating pressure
TROUBLESHOOTING: STEAM CONDENSER
- At operational capacity (Running), Check Gauge to ensure pressure is between 3000 to 3500 PSI. Reset the gauge to ensure that it is working correctly. The gauge should read the same number it did before you reset it. If it does not, refer to maintenance on the gauge. Record data.
- Inspect outer casing from the bottom, to about head height, assuring that the casing has no cracks or general damage. If the casing is damaged, you may be able to see the inner insulation exposed. Listen for any air leaks around the condenser, or evidence of steam visually escaping. At no time should you steam emitting from the equipment.
- Locate the Disconnect switch for the specified equipment, grab the switch handle and set it to the OFF position, killing the power supply to the condenser.
- Once the power supply is disconnected, locate the cover plate located at the base of the condenser. Remove the cover plate exposing the Vacuum pump and Inlet Valve.
- Examine the Vacuum pump for any signs of air leaks. The pressure should be maintained even while the condenser is disconnection. Listen for any air leaks around the front and back seals of the pump.
- Examine the pump for any signs of water leakage around the front and back seals. Any bodies of water found inside the internal compartment is a sign that the Valve or Pump may be leaking. This could be caused by bad seals, or even a crack in the metal body of either part.
- Examine the Vacuum pumps motor for any signs of rust or corrosion, and assure the positive and negative electrical connections are correctly in position and tightened.
- Lubricate all bearings (electric motor as well as the vacuum bearings) with an approved dielectric grease.
- Replace the cover plate if no problems are found.
- Return to the pressure gauge and record any pressure loss during your inspection.
- Return to the disconnect switch and place the handle in the ON position.
- Return any locks or safety devices in place by your company.
