As a Line Technician at Hilltop Electrical Membership Cooperative, you will be tasked with isolating problems within the Los Angeles electrical grid. You will be spending your time in a service truck, riding the line as you scout for problems, faults, repairs that may be needed, etcetera. A Hilltop EMC technician is given the tools necassary to identify a problem within an equipment, circuit or system. The most important tool is the SCADA, line management software. SCADA provides a visual of all the equipment and lines within Los Angeles. When a fault occurs, SCADA has the power to identify which structure the problem originated, as well as give diagnostic testing for many of the substation and power plant equipment circuits. Lets take a look at the SCADA system.. **The instructor would show you a projection on the wall infront of you ((Click HERE to view the map))** Lets take a look at the Seville Substation in South East Los Angeles. You will notice these lines are identified with numbers and letters, such as 1A, 2A.. Etcetera. You will also notice a yellow dot signifies each power line pole, and then you will see green dots, these signify "Tap" poles, which have a cutout fuse on them. These tap poles allow the lineman to energize, or de-energize stretches of line. Lets pretend we have a scenerio where there is a squirrel that has got caught in the transformer wires on pole 18B...
